Worry is one of those nagging thought processes that affect us waking and sleeping. It’s a toss and turn night when worry about the day’s mistakes keep me up longer than I want to be awake. Worrisome feelings interrupt my sleep with a dream that’s way too realistic or a nudge from my partner saying you’re making some weird noises… Well, not tonight.

I’m going to allow water to wash all my worries away today!

Water is so soothing to me. The marketing world tried to capture it years ago with “Have a Calgon moment” by retreating from the world to take a bath with Calgon oil bath beads to soften your skin. Have you ever noticed that in the shower all things come into perspective better? It happens for me often. I get clarity of an idea or remember something that was eluding me. It seems to me it’s the flow of the water. I’m just not sure how it works, but it does.

Summer is just about here and it gave me pause to consider the following scene. Whether it’s from my memory or a memory I would like to have had, it’s a fun picture to imagine. On the side of a creek, you and your partner, or your child, or a good friend, sit and talk while skipping rocks across the water. No worries can touch you there. It’s time for summer pools to be open in our neighborhood. Swimming, walking, or even sitting and lounging around water gives a lightness to the day, to the interactions people have with each other.

Swimming is considered one of the low impact, high benefit sports for people of all ages. It’s fun to feel your weight lighten as you move in the water or as you walk in the deeper area. I particularly like that feeling of buoyancy and like the low stress nature but high calorie burn of the exercise it provides as you spend time doing it.

The sound of rain, the sound of the ocean, the sound of a creek, all take my mind into a natural state of relaxation where I can be present to what I’m doing and focus on what’s right in front of me without considering what might go wrong in the future, which is what worry is. What might or might not happen, what could or could not be taken away, what others could or could not do to us, those real worries wash away when given the frame of water around them. The following video with audio is a great example of just taking a moment to move into a watery view of things. To listen to the sounds of water flowing relieves stress in me. And, I’ll leave you with this video to wash all your own worries away. Let me know how you like it by commenting below.
Best for now,
Mary

To live stressfree, enjoy your memories, create new memories and make them beautiful. What we remember can be as real as our present day experiences. When I saw this lovely picture, it conjured up for me a memory, a good one, so I'll share it with you and hold on to that feeling of lightness, of relaxation, of fun, of humor. Where those feelings are, stress has no stronghold.

My first date with my husband Barney was visiting a place called Longwood Gardens. It is a convergence of the beauty of nature with the meticulous meddling of human creativity in gardening. Since I have no green thumb, I so appreciate others' gifts in this area. As we walked through the beautiful garden displays, there was a calmness and serenity that offset any feelings of anxiety that were playing near both of us that day.

And play we did, laughter came easily in our time together. At one point, as I admired the waterlily pond with its lovely flowers and huge leaves, I wondered out loud if someone could sit on those leaves or use them as stepping stones across the pond. The next thing which I remember most about that day, Barney playfully pushed me into the lily pond, and caught me before I went into the water, thank goodness!

What I remember today is not the anxiety of getting close to the water, but the freedom of being able to laugh, to enjoy nature and love, and to always wonder out loud, no matter what!

The habit of looking at things from a position of "It all turns out for good" serves us well in handling the stress in our lives today. The stressfree habit to develop is to remember those occasions that brought us joy and hope and moved us to this point in our lives. We can be stressfree now and create conditions in our interior lives that mirror something that worked for us before.

best for now,
